Jacob Dewitt Houston was born 6 June, 1874 and raised in the Rocky Mount area of Miller County. He enlisted in B Company 6th Missouri Volunteer Infantry.
The 6th Missouri became the only Missouri Regiment to serve in Cuba, arriving in country 24 December, 1898 performing garrison duty as part of General Fitzhugh Lee’s 7th Army Corps, key in being in the demonstration event for the formal taking over of the island of Cuba by the United States on January 1, 1899.
Houston then spent the rest of his life as a farmer in Miller County passing away within minutes of his wife 1 May, 1957. His living relatives include grandsons Bruce Houston in Columbia and Joey Houston in Kansas City.
