In the years before he served as the Director of Procurement and later as Director of Revenue under Governor Warren Hearnes, Jefferson City resident James Schaffner was drafted into the U.S. Army in World War II. Following his induction and subsequent training at Camp Robinson, Schaffner was deployed to Okinawa as an enlisted soldier, where he fought under the 7th Infantry Division.
He was twice wounded and earned two Purple Hearts during his service. In addition to his civilian careers after the war, Schaffner went on to serve thirty years in the Army Reserve and Missouri National Guard, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel.
